Work by Georg Philipp Telemann (1681 - 1767)
Premiered in 1726 to a libretto by Michel du Boullay

This opera in three acts is a ‘musical drama with texts in French, German and Italian’, whose overture, ‘amusements’, choruses and dances are written ‘à la française’. Orpheus represents the culmination of Telemann’s work for the Hamburg Opera. Telemann chose to set this musical drama to the libretto of the lyrical tragedy Orphée by Michel Du Boullay (previously set to music by Lully’s son, Louis, in 1690).
