Elisabeth Askren

A native New Yorker, Elizabeth Askren began piano studies at the age of 3 and entered the Juilliard School’s Pre-College Division at 14. She graduated in 1997 from the Oberlin Conservatory and studied privately with pianist Byron Janis before moving to France to continue studies in piano and orchestral conducting at the Schola Cantorum and Ecole Normale de Paris. After private studies with conductor Janos Furst, in 2004 she completed an accelerated Master’s at Bard’s Conductors Institute as a student of Harold Farberman (conducting) and Joan Tower (composition). She has participated in several international masterclasses and festivals (Ottawa’s National Arts Centre, Tanglewood BUTI, Cabrillo, Vendôme, Vienna Hochschule, Villecroze, Salzburg Mozarteum ), with conductors Kurt Masur, Marin Alsop, Ton Koopman, pianists Jacques Rouvier, Sergio Perticaroli, and leading pedagogues Kenneth Kiesler and Daniel Lewis.

Former Music Director of the Chorus and Orchestra of Sciences Po for six seasons, she is currently the founding Music Director of Orchestre 2021 and Artistic Director of the Fondation des Etats-Unis cultural season since 2004. She has assisted international conductors such as John Nelson, Bernard Labadie, Pierre-Michel Durand, and Louis Lane, and is Assistant Conductor to David Stern and Opera Fuoco since 2006 for productions throughout Europe. Highlights from recent seasons include guest conducting the Ensemble Orchestral de Paris, premiering several contemporary works with Orchestre 2021, directing the Fondation des Etats-Unis 8-part cultural cycle, “Un siècle d’Elliott Carter/A Century of Elliott Carter”, and working with Lorin Maazel as a Conducting Apprentice at the inaugural edition session the conductor’s program of the Castleton festival. Winner of Adami’s « Jeune Talent chef d’orchestre » 2010 prize, Ms. Askren competed this winter as one of 12 finalist candidates for the 2010 Gustav Mahler International Conducting Competition with the Bamberg Symphony.  She is a 2008-09 Aldeburgh Conducting Fellow and laureate of the Salzburg Mozarteum, the Fondation des Etats-Unis, and the Fondation Royaumont, and serves on the jury of the FLAME International Music Competition.
